PSTN Replacement …
BT Group announced in 2017 that the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) would be closed down in 2025.
As Wholesale Line Rental (WLR) relies on the PSTN, that means Openreach will no longer offer or support WLR products (that enable own-brand phone service on their network using our copper cables and networking equipment) by the end of 2025, as they move to new digital, internet-based (All IP) services such as FTTP, SOGfast and SOGEA.
Openreach stop selling new WLR across the UK from September 2023. And as they continue our full fibre roll out, they are also winding down the range of copper-based services they supply.
The following Openreach products will therefore be withdrawn as part of WLR withdrawal:
WLR3 analogue WLR3 ISDN2
WLR3 ISDN30 LLU SMPF
SLU SMPF Narrowband Line Share
SIP Trunks
A SIP trunk (Session Initiation Protocol trunk) is a type of communication protocol used to establish voice and video calls over the internet. It is a virtual connection between an organization’s IP-based PBX (private branch exchange) and the internet telephony service provider (ITSP), which replaces the traditional telephone lines used for communication.
By using SIP trunks, organizations can eliminate the need for physical phone lines and reduce their communication costs while enjoying features like caller ID, call forwarding, voicemail, and more. Additionally, SIP trunks provide greater flexibility, scalability, and redundancy than traditional phone lines, making them an ideal solution for businesses of all sizes.
